Biological scientist joins UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following addition to its faculty and leadership staff.

Dr. Hanna J. Broome, an assistant professor of biological sciences at Mississippi College, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of cell and molecular biology and assistant dean of graduate education in the School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences. She will also serve as program director of the M.S. in Biomedical Sciences Program.

After receiving her B.S. in biological sciences from Mississippi College in 2007, Broome had a two-year stint as a secondary science teacher at University Christian School in Flowood. She then earned her M.S. in biomedical sciences and her Ph.D. in biochemistry at UMMC, where she received the 2013 Helen Turner, M.D., Ph.D. Scholarship Award. Broome continued at UMMC as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Physiology from 2013-14. She joined the Mississippi College faculty in 2014.

Broome is the author or coauthor of seven articles in peer-reviewed professional journals and has given presentations at national scientific meetings. During her time at Mississippi College, she taught undergraduate and graduate classes in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology and human gross anatomy.
